What does it mean to "check in?"

Let’s say you’re studying at a Starbucks in Chicago. Open Spark on your smart phone, and check in to announce what you’re up to. Check the community feed for other students or alum nearby, and then use the app to chat about class, get together to watch a game, or do anything else you fancy.

How do I get in on this?
